Review by George Norman (Cybersecurity Editor)

on 21 Jan 2014

The Ghostery add-on for Mozilla’s Firefox browser is a handy tool that will help protect your privacy. You see, webpages use certain elements to track your online activities. Ghostery detects these trackers, tells you about them, and allows you to block them. Social network widgets, ads, invisible pixels, and other trackers will be detected and blocked.

This review focuses on Ghostery for Firefox. You need to know though that Ghostery is also available for other browsers: Chrome, Opera, Safari, Internet Explorer. You also need to know that Ghostery is available for mobile platforms: iOS and Android.

When you’re done installing the Ghostery add-on for Firefox, you will be presented with a “Welcome to Ghostery for Firefox” introduction that quickly presents the add-on’s functionality. Go through this introduction to better understand what Ghostery does.

When you’re done installing the Ghostery add-on for Firefox, you will see a new icon in the top right hand corner. Click the icon and you will be presented with the Findings Panel. When you visit a webpage, Ghostery detects all the trackers and presents them in this panel. The first time you check out the Findings Panel you will be presented with a tutorial that teaches you how to use the panel.

First up, Ghostery lets you know when you’re being tracked. When you visit a webpage, the add-on identifies all trackers and tells you about them. Next up, Ghostery allows you to choose what you want to do: allow the trackers, block them, block only certain trackers and allow others. Thanks to Ghostery you can block all sorts of trackers: ads, analytics, beacons, widgets, and more.

If you care about privacy, you will want to block trackers – and Ghostery does a brilliant job of blocking them!

Pros

Ghostery is available for Firefox and Firefox for Android; it is also available for Chrome, Opera, Safari, Internet Explorer, and iOS. Useful information on what Ghostery does is provided by an introduction; a tutorial will help you figure out the Findings Panel. Ghostery identifies, tells you about, and blocks trackers.

Cons

None that I could think of.
